On the Roads of Đồng Văn, Hà Giang: A Film Pre-Wedding | Bằng & Tiên

Some places you know by heart before you arrive. Hà Giang was not one of them. It was a first for Bằng and Tiên, and a first for us too, and that is part of why this set feels the way it does.

We chose Đồng Văn, in the far north of Vietnam, on the Đồng Văn Karst Plateau, a UNESCO Global Geopark where ancient limestone mountains roll out in endless grey waves, split by steep passes and scattered with highland villages. Beautiful, but also raw and humbling, a place that does not hand over its best frames easily.

So we went looking for them. Two of our photographers flew from Saigon to Hanoi two days before the shoot, rented a car and drove the whole way up, both to scout and to carry Bằng and Tiên in comfort once filming began. Those two scouting days were honestly a little unhinged: more than a hundred kilometres a day on narrow, cliff-edge mountain roads. By the end we had driven almost every stretch of the route and seen it with our own eyes.

We went to the famous signature spots first, the ones everyone photographs. In person they fell short of what we had imagined, their wild, local character worn smooth by tourism. Rather than force a plan that no longer felt true, we threw it out and trusted our eyes instead. Every place that stopped us on the road, we marked. We pulled over, climbed out, studied the direction of the light and the shape of the land, and asked one honest question: is there really something here worth making? Frame by frame, kilometre by kilometre, we built the shoot from scratch out of what the journey actually gave us.

When we shared the new plan with Bằng and Tiên, they gave us their trust completely, and that trust is what let us chase the version of Hà Giang we believed in.

In the end, it gave everything back. Sunrise spilling over the road to Mèo Vạc. Quiet, lyrical lanes threading between the villages. A sky on fire above the rocky plateau. And through all of it, the easy, genuine warmth of the people who call these highlands home. Shot entirely on film, this is the Hà Giang we went looking for, and the one Bằng and Tiên will carry with them.
