Jess & Emma: A Joyful Documentary Wedding at An Lam Retreats Saigon River

Some weddings you photograph; others you simply get to witness. Jess and Emma’s documentary wedding at An Lam Retreats Saigon River was very much the second kind.

They asked us for one thing: pure documentary. No stiff posing, no shot list, no interrupting the day to chase a photo. They just wanted to be completely themselves and actually enjoy their own wedding. So that is exactly what we did, staying close and unnoticed while their story unfolded.

A destination wedding at An Lam Retreats Saigon River

Tucked along the Saigon River just outside Ho Chi Minh City, An Lam Retreats Saigon River is one of the loveliest places in the south of Vietnam to marry: a lush riverside sanctuary of old trees, timber pavilions and quiet water, a world away from the noise of the city. For a destination wedding, it feels both grand and deeply personal.

Under a canopy of green and white blooms, Emma walked a garden aisle beneath a long cathedral veil while their people rose to their feet. It was the kind of setting that needs no help from a photographer, only someone paying attention.

Two people, completely themselves

What made the day was the two of them. Jess, all warmth and easy humour, never stopped finding Emma across a room, always with that same tender look and a quiet, protective kind of care. Emma met it with her whole heart, affectionate and full of energy, lighting up everyone around her.

Two women, completely at home in each other. Jess and Emma are one of a growing number of same-sex couples choosing Vietnam for their destination wedding, and being trusted with a day this personal is exactly why we love documentary photography. As documentary photographers, our job was simply to stay out of the way and let that love speak for itself.

Where Vietnam and America became one family

The celebration was a joyful meeting of two worlds. Vietnamese and American family and friends folded into one long, laughing, table-thumping party, and somehow, all evening, there was not a trace of distance between the two cultures. Grandparents, old friends and flower girls in the garden, everyone simply belonged.

These are the moments documentary wedding photography lives for: the unguarded laughter, the happy chaos, the quiet glances between people who love each other.

A celebration that ran late into the night

As the sun set over the river, the party moved indoors beneath a ceiling of falling blossom, and it did not slow down. A grand entrance, heartfelt speeches, a dance floor that filled and stayed full, and the two of them at the centre of it all, dipping, spinning and laughing until the lights and the smoke and the music blurred into one glorious late night.

No timeline could have scripted it. It was, from first light to last dance, entirely theirs.
