Some weddings are remembered for how perfectly everything went. This one, an intimate wedding in the hills of Bao Loc near Da Lat, we remember for the opposite reason, and it became one of our favourite days of the year.

The plan: sunset vows on a green hillside

All through the planning, My and Loc had pictured one thing: a beautiful vow ceremony, the two of them trading promises from the bottom of their hearts, on a lush green lawn under the golden light of a Bao Loc afternoon. The chairs were set, the yellow flowers were up, the hills rolled away behind the arch. Everything was ready.

And then the rain came

The guests had found their seats. Everything was in place. And then, in the last few minutes before the ceremony was meant to begin, it started to rain. Not a passing shower but a heavy, stubborn downpour, the kind we rarely ever see in Bao Loc. For a moment, everyone thought the day so many people had poured their hearts into might not happen the way it was meant to.

How everyone held the day together

But what we remember most from this wedding is not the rain. It is the way everyone came together to hold the ceremony up. People rushed to carry tables and chairs under cover. Someone stood guarding My's cake, letting the rain blow straight into them so it would not be ruined. Someone else ran to the bride's room, just to make sure she was okay.

Love, louder than the storm

And when the whole crowd started chanting My and Loc's names over the sound of the rain that still had not stopped, we realised the weather did not really matter anymore. Because the thing most present that day was never the storm. It was the love everyone had for one another. This is why we love intimate weddings: strip away the perfect conditions, and what is left is the realest thing of all.
