Film Wedding & Pre-Wedding Photography in Vietnam

At TIMO Wedding we shoot on 35mm and 120mm medium format film alongside digital, in Saigon, Da Lat, Ho Tram, Nha Trang and wherever a story takes us. This is a plain guide to what film photography really is, why it looks the way it does, and how it works when you are planning a film wedding in Vietnam as a couple travelling from abroad.

What we mean by film photography

Film photography means the images are captured on a physical roll of film loaded into an analogue camera, not on a digital sensor. We work mainly in two formats. 35mm is loved for its classic grain and honest, reportage feel. 120mm medium format uses a larger negative, which gives creamy tones, beautiful depth and remarkable detail. After the wedding the film is hand developed and scanned, and only then do we see the frames for the first time. There is no screen to check on the day, and that is exactly the point: film asks the photographer to slow down and wait for the real moment instead of the posed one.

Why couples choose film for their wedding

Film is not about looking retro. It is about how the picture feels, and how it will feel in twenty years.

  • It ages gracefully. Film has been photographed at weddings for generations, and it never looks like a passing trend. Your album will feel just as right decades from now.
  • The colours and skin tones feel true. Film renders light gently, so faces look warm and natural rather than digital and flat.
  • It slows the whole day down. With a limited number of frames on each roll, every shutter press is chosen with care. That patience is what lets the honest moments surface.
  • Grain, not noise. The texture of film is soft and organic, the opposite of the harsh digital noise you get in low light.

Film suits pre-wedding shoots just as well

A film pre-wedding shoot is one of our favourite things to photograph, because it is relaxed and there is time to wander. In Da Lat we spent a slow day with Binh and Ha with almost none of the usual must have spots. No chasing a single sunrise, no long list of poses. Just a misty lake, an old bench, a rented Vespa in the rain, and two people who forgot the camera was there. That is the sweet spot for film, and it is where the most natural pictures of a couple tend to come from.
