A Sunset Pre-Wedding at L'Alya Ninh Van Bay, Nha Trang | Stephanie & Dung

A few days before their shoot, Stephanie and Dung told me exactly what they were hoping for: a sunset on the beach, just the two of them, somewhere beautiful to remember this trip by. They had flown all the way from Australia, found me through a friend's kind recommendation, and this Nha Trang pre-wedding was the keepsake they most wanted to take home.

We met at L'Alya Ninh Van Bay, a quiet resort tucked into the hills and water of Ninh Van Bay, a short boat ride across from Nha Trang. But the sky had other plans. The whole afternoon stayed grey and heavy, with no sun at all, and the golden light they had dreamed of simply never came.

So we made the most of what we had. Ninh Van Bay is all wooden villas, soft light and quiet corners, and even under clouds it is beautiful. We slowed down inside the villa, by the windows and the water, and let Stephanie and Dung simply be close.

Then we wandered: the shaded jungle steps, the green gardens, the old wooden bridge out over the bay. They are so easy and warm together that the frames kept coming, cloudy sky and all.

By late afternoon, with still no light, they even thought about ending the shoot early. I suggested something different: let's sit down, take a break, talk, and just wait together until it gets dark. So we did. We waded out to the swings over the water, played in the shallows, and let the evening settle around us.

The light kept fading, soft and grey, and it really did feel like the day was done. We stayed anyway.

And then, just when we thought it was over, the sky turned. For a few short minutes right after sunset, the whole horizon burned bright red, and the still water caught every bit of it. It came and went so fast, but it was exactly what they had crossed an ocean for, and more.

Sometimes, being patient is the whole thing. A few quiet minutes of waiting turned an overcast afternoon into the images Stephanie and Dung had flown across the world for.
