Sapa Pre-Wedding & Engagement Photos: Karen & Wilson's Cherry Blossom Love Story

Finding couples who truly align with your artistic vision is one of the greatest rewards of being a wedding photographer. Karen and Wilson first found me through MyWed, an international wedding photography community. Wilson had travelled to Sapa once before and was deeply moved by its raw, majestic beauty. He knew right then that Sapa was not just another destination. It was the place where he would ask Karen to be his wife, and where they would write the first chapter of their forever.

When they first reached out, their prompt was refreshingly simple: "We just want to shoot among the blooming cherry blossoms. For everything else, take us wherever you feel is best."

Cold air, warm coffee, and an instant connection

We arrived in Sapa a day before the shoot. There was no rush, no pressure, just time to wander through the town, soak in the vibrant local culture, and feel the pulse of the mountains.

I still remember sitting together on that freezing evening, temperatures dropping below 10 degrees, holding warm cups of coffee as we talked about life. As fellow lovers of music and art, our conversation flowed effortlessly. That shared appreciation for creative expression built an instant, genuine bond between us before I even picked up my camera.

Beyond the scenery: choosing authenticity over perfection

The day of the shoot did not go entirely as planned. We hit a few unexpected bumps along the way, the kind of unpredictable hiccups that come with outdoor location shoots. But looking back, none of that mattered. Karen and Wilson stayed present in the moment, wrapped in each other's warmth amidst the quiet, dramatic landscape of late-year Sapa.

For me, that is the heart of what I do. Every time my couples look back at their photos, I want them to relive a day of genuine comfort, laughter and real love, not a day spent holding stiff, unnatural poses or forcing an aesthetic that is not true to who they are.

Karen and Wilson's story in Sapa remains one of my favourite reminders of why I shoot: to preserve raw, unfiltered moments that feel like home.

Seven years on, a full circle

What makes this session even more meaningful to me is everything that came after it. We first created these photos together back in 2019. Recently, over the 2026 New Year, Karen, Wilson and I welcomed the new year side by side and spent it looking back on all of these memories. Seeing how their love has grown, and meeting the two beautiful little ones it has brought into the world, gave me a feeling I can hardly put into words. This is the part of the job no award can ever match: getting to watch a love story keep unfolding, long after the shutter stops.
